St. Matthew's History

In 1957, our charter members proclaimed, "We are a group of people interested in guiding others in the ways of Christ.  Our program is one of worship and Christian education.  Our purpose is to serve you and the community."

The first service was held at Wakefield Forest School with 80 persons in attendance.  In 1960 the church broke ground and started building its first chapel.  In 1990, we broke ground on our final building and current Sanctuary. The magnificent brick memorial wall on the Sanctuary depicts Christ stepping down from the cross to be a part of our life.

During the past 50+ years, membership and community outreach at St. Matthew's has continued to grow.  We currently have more than 1,500 members.  Our outreach ministries target needy local, national and international communities with programs such as Heifer International, FACETS Hot Meals, the Lamb Center, English as a Second Language, Meals on Wheels, Appalachia Service Project, Jeremiah Project, Voices of Youth and much more.

Let's grow together as St. Matthew's embraces the next 50 years of guiding others in the ways of Christ.
