English as a Second Language

In the Fairfax County school system, students speak 150 different languages and dialects. John Wesley said, "The world is my parish", but in St. Matthew's we believe "The world is IN our parish." New immigrants are often isolated, confused and marginalized. Many live below the poverty level. Most are without systems of support to ease their transition to a new country. As Christians, we must respond.

With a shared language, it is possible to build bridges of cultural understanding, community and friendship. Our desire is that students who come to study English will find in this ministry the hope, dignity, faith and understanding they seek.

The ESOL Program at St. Matthew has more than 100 students in five class levels. We meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 PM to 9 PM from September to March.

We serve a diverse immigrant population. Many of our students are educated individuals that only lack English language skills to reach their full potential in our society. There are many opportunities for additional volunteers to become involved in the program. You just need to be willing to share your knowledge with others.

Approximately 60 volunteers in our church support the program. We have 24 teachers, 10 substitute teachers and other volunteers, 2 church circles provide snacks for our students and 2 volunteers set up the snacks in the evening.

The ministries of social justice and evangelism go hand-in-hand and faithful ministry means doing both. This is our obligation and opportunity as Christ's disciples. Jesus said: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." And to this we would add, "I did not know English and you taught me."

If you would like to volunteer to assist with our ESOL program or would like more information about the program, please contact the church office at 703-978-3500.
