Food & Comfort
Food Closet - St. Matthew's Food Closet provides a bag of non-perishable food to anyone asking for food. Each bag contains a 3-4 day supply of basic foods. The Food Closet also provides Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets containing a turkey, vegetables and fruits, and seasonal treats such as cookies, pies, candies and sweet breads. The holiday baskets are given to persons selected by FACETS and the church staff. For more details, contact the church office.
Food for Others - St. Matthews is a partner with Food for Others, the Fairfax County Food Bank. Food for Others gleans food, primarily baked goods, from the Giant supermarket in University Mall on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and from the Safeway supermarket at Burke Center on Tuesday mornings. St. Matthew's volunteers distribute food from the warehouse to hungry people at sites in Bailey's Crossroads every Tuesday and Wednesday evening. For more details, contact the church office or visit http://www.foodforothers.org.
Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Ministry - The Contemporary Issues Adult Sunday School Class and other friends of all ages make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches once a month and deliver them to the Food for Others warehouse in Merrifield. Using contributions of peanut butter and jelly from church members, bread often donated by Food for Others, and supplemented by a special offering taken each Sunday in class, participants meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM to make the sandwiches. Hands and hearts also join together to prepare sandwiches on the last Thursday morning of the month. All sandwiches go the help feed the hungry locally. For more details, contact the church office.
Wesley Housing Development Corporation - Created as a result of an "Urban Consultation" convened by the United Methodist churches of the Arlington and Alexandria Districts, Wesley Housing has worked for 30 years to develop, own, operate and maintain affordable housing and sustain quality communities for low- and moderate-income persons in Northern Virginia. To date, Wesley Housing has sponsored 18 communities comprising more than 1,000 housing units and served more than 10,000 Northern Virginia families. For more details, contact the church office or visit http://www.wesleyhousing.org.
Society of St. Andrew - Through its Potato Project, the Society of St. Andrew is able to direct 45,000-pound tractor-trailer loads of fresh, nutritious produce to soup kitchens, Native American reservations, food pantries, low-income housing areas, local churches and other hunger agencies for distribution to the poor. Destined for landfills because of slight imperfections in size, shape, sugar content or surface blemishes, this produce is instead donated to the Society of St. Andrew, which pays only for the transportation and packaging of the food-an amazingly low four cents per pound! That means the Society can provide food to the nation's hungry for about a penny per serving! The Potato Project delivers about 20 million pounds of food per year to the nation's hungry each year. For more details, contact the church office or visit http://www.endhunger.org.
