Staff/Volunteer Openings

We always welcome any extra hands, hearts and minds to help us spread God's love. Read below on how you can start making a difference with your time and talents.

Musicians & Singers: As we prepare to move CrossRoads contemporary worship to 9:45 AM on Sunday morning, we are seeking guitarists, drummers, keyboardists and vocalists to be part of the worship team who leads our contemporary worship service. Time commitment involves a weekly rehearsal and Sunday morning worship. If you are interested or would like to get more information, contact Kathy Frakes.

Sunday Morning Greeters: Need volunteers to serve as greeters on Sunday mornings as well as people to prepare coffee for our Sunday morning coffee time. Contact Holly Markwalter or sign up on the sign-up sheet on her office door.

Ushers: We need new ushers on all three of our worship teams. Contact Head Usher Phil Guth (703-425-5884) or David Throckmorton (703-208-3505) to join.

VBS Leaders: Join the Galactic Blast Team! Help lead our children on an outer space adventure during Vacation Bible School, July 19-23, 9 AM to Noon. We are looking for leaders to help with crafts, games, snacks, music, mission, storytelling, counseling and more. Contact Carrie Schwab for more information.

Earn Service Hours for Scouts, Honor Society or School: There is a short term need for help straightening and alphabetizing our congregation’s nametag holders. If you have an hour to give, contact Holly Markwalter or 703-978-3500 ext 31.

Baby Shower for All God's Children: We are collecting items for FACETS, Kate Hanley Homeless Shelter and Grace Ministries. Grab your family and do some shopping for those less fortunate. A list of suggested items is in the Information Hallway along with a collection box for the items.

Want to Lose Weight? Spend 3 minutes per day and share fun with hungry children. It's actually 1-1/2 hours once per month. Join the St. Matthew's Food for Others team to distribute food once a month on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Pick your night. Contact Bo Tumasz at 703-239-2936.

Librarian and Helpers: We are looking for someone to be a librarian for the church library plus volunteers to be in the library from 9:30 to 11:30 AM Sunday mornings. If you are interested, please contact Nancy Blythe at 703-280-1205 or Joyce Carver at 703-978-3500.

Nursery Coordinator: A volunteer is needed to help with calling/scheduling childcare workers for the Nursery on Sunday mornings and for other events.

Nursery Workers: We are looking for volunteers to help in the nursery during the worship services on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. If you are interested in working with our little ones, contact Carrie Schwab.

Welcoming/Hospitality Ministry: To extend a warm welcome and to offer hospitality to visitors to St. Matthew’s, we are asking that everyone at St. Matthew’s volunteer in some way in the welcoming/hospitality ministry:

  • Greet at one of three worship services.
  • Prepare coffee prior to 8:30 AM on Sunday (coffee brews during the service); clean up the coffee area after Sunday school.
  • Deliver visitor packets on Sunday afternoon.
  • Become a sponsor for a new member (a one-year commitment).
  • Provide refreshments for visitors/new member meeting with the pastors.
  • Be a welcoming presence at the information desk located in the Narthex.

Creation Care Team: Have an urge to plant a tree but don't want to be labeled a "tree hugger"? Would you like an opportunity to care for God's Creation that would make your dad happy ("close the door", "turn off the lights", "don't throw that away--we can reuse it")? We will provide practical means for members of St. Matthew's to live out our faith through the care of all God's Creation. Contact Leeanne Alonso or David Throckmorton for more information and to sign-up. (Note: Tree huggers are welcome too!)

Parent Volunteers: Needed for W.O.W./Extended Session. Sign up on the chart on the door of Room 107/109 (Extended Service Room).

Acolytes Needed: Youth ages 10 and up who would like to light the candles for our worship services should contact Karen Bickley (703-978-0325). Training is provided and we work around choir and bell schedules.

Make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 PM in the Social Hall. All sandwiches will be distributed by Food For Others.

A Multi-Cultural Experience: Come make new friends from Korea, Nicaragua, Iran, Bolivia and more than 20 other countries as an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) volunteer this fall. We are seeking new teachers (who teach either Tuesday or Thursday night from 7-9 PM), substitute teachers, and a Thursday night "food helper". No teaching experience, English grammar training, or foreign language skills needed. You just need to be willing to share your knowledge of our country and the English language with eager adult students. Curriculum guides, reference materials, training opportunities, and snacks are provided. Come join in the fun! Contact Leeanne Alonso or Barbara Silberzahn.

Faith Leapers Need You! Volunteers to teach a workshop during the Sunday School hour are much needed. Please see church office if you can volunteer.

Extended Session Teachers: Do you enjoy working with children 3 to 5 years of age?  Would you like to share with them the love of God in a warm, welcoming, creative environment?  If so, we need your help in Extended Session.  Hours are from 8:15 AM – 12:15 PM.  With a full staff, people usually work one Sunday per month.  This is a paid position ($10.83/hour).  If you are interested in helping or want more information, contact the church office.
