Welcome to St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church

Hello!  My name is Nickie Moreno Howard and I am the associate  pastor  here at St. Matthew’s UMC.  I am so excited that you are taking the time to read about our church. I am so glad you are considering joining us for worship and want to provide you with as much information as possible to ensure you feel prepared and comfortable when you walk in the doors of our church.  If you have any questions not answered on this page, please don’t hesitate to contact me at nhoward@stmatthewsumc.org

What are Service Times?

St. Matthew’s offers two services every Sunday morning:  9:00 a.m., and 11:15 a.m.  Our 9:00 a.m. service is traditional worship while our 11:15 a.m. service is modern worship.  Sunday school is available for all ages at 10:15 AM.

What is Traditional Worship?

As its name suggests, traditional worship is a reverent service featuring hymns, prayers, scripture reading, special music, and a sermon by one of our pastors.  The special music is provided by our many vocal and handbell choirs.  The five vocal choirs and 6 handbell choirs rotate through these services on a monthly basis.  Communion is held once a month on the first Sunday of the month at our traditional services.  Another feature of our traditional worship services are our children’s time when children are invited to the altar for a special lesson from one of our pastors.  At the 11:15 service children ages 3 to first-grade are invited to attend Children’s worship immediately following the children’s sermon.  Beginning September 8th Children’s Worship is available during both services.

What is Modern Worship?

Modern worship offers a more informal, high-energy worship.  Contemporary Christian music is led by our modern worship leader and band.  The service opens with singing of several praise songs with words projected onto screens at the front of the sanctuary.  Scripture readings and a sermon are followed by Communion every Sunday at our modern worship service.  Children’s worship is available during both services.

Who Can Take Communion?

The United Methodist Church has an open table policy.  If you are a believing Christian from any background you are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper.  Children are free to partake at their parents’ discretion.  After partaking of communion, you are invited to kneel at the altar rail for prayer as you feel called.

What about Children in worship?

Children are always welcomed in worship.  Baskets containing Children Worship Bags are located at the doors to the sanctuary.  In these bags are activities to help kids connect to the worship service.  There is also a nursery available for children birth to 3 years old from 8:15 to 12:15 on Sunday mornings.  Our nursery team cares for the children in a safe and loving environment.  A pager system allows parents to be contacted as needed.

At the 9:00 and 11:15 service children are invited to come to the altar for a special time with the pastors.  Children 4 through 2nd grade are welcomed to depart the sanctuary following the pastors’ message and attend Children’s Worship.  In Children’s Worship they experience Bible lessons, songs, crafts, and games. For more information on children’s worship click here.

Our Children and Youth Sunday school programs run concurrently with adult Sunday School at 10:15 a.m.   Classes are provided for 2 year old through seniors in high school.

Our nursery is available from birth to 3 years  from 8:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

How should I dress?

To be honest, you should dress however you are comfortable.  More people dress up at the traditional service than the modern service.    Most people are very casually dressed at the modern worship service.  Because people are coming and going all morning from our different services you will see all styles of dress.

How do I get there?

St. Matthew’s address is 8617 Little River Turnpike and it sits at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Wakefield Drive.  Access to our parking lot is from Wakefield Drive.

Where do I park?

There is parking on three sides of our church building.  The parking lot is accessed from Wakefield Drive.

What about access?

A handicapped entrance and parking are located at the back of our church building.  The back parking area is easy to enter from Virginia Avenue, the road that runs along the back of our church.

What happens when I walk in the doors?

When you walk in the front or back doors of our church, you will be welcomed by our greeting team.  If this is your first visit to St. Matthew’s please come to our Welcome Desk located just inside our front doors.  There a member of our welcome team can direct you to Sunday school classes, the nursery, and other small group opportunities.
